Dental hygienists remove soft and hard deposits from teeth, teach patients how to practice good oral hygiene and provide other preventative dental care. They examine patients' teeth and gums, recording the presence of diseases or abnormalities.
Dental hygienists use an assortment of tools to complete their tasks. Hand and rotary instruments and ultrasonic devices are used to clean and polish teeth, which includes removing tartar, stains, and plaque. Hygienists use x-ray machines to take dental pictures, and sometimes develop the film. They may use models of tteth to explain oral hygiene, perform root planning as a periodontal therapy, or apply cavity-preventative agents such as flourides and pit and fissure sealants.

Periodontics is a dental specialty that involves the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes and the maintenance of the health, function and esthetics of these structures and tissues.
Periodontal Disease
The word "periodontal" comes from the Greek, meaning "around the teeth." Periodontal disease starts as a bacterial infection which attacks the gums, jawbone and ligaments that support the teeth and hold them in the jaw. Periodontal disease are usually painless and may develop slowly or progress quite rapidly. Unless you have regular check ups, you may not be aware you have a periodontal disease until your gums and bone have been seriously damaged that tooth loss in inevitable.
